What exactly have I spotted here?

VW Squareback. Nice find. I always wanted one in an orange herringbone paint scheme; an idea that came out of nowhere that has followed me around for years.

Type 3 Squareback! And a pretty old one (‘6os?), based on the turn signal indicators. Nice car!

Yep, Type 3. I came home from the hospital in one of those in 1978 (a ‘72 model, IIRC). Rear engine with a decent storage shelf, plus a frunk. They’ve been rare in the US since they were new.

My sister came home in one three years after this photo was taken.

Definitely rare, i don’t recall seeing these before at any point, haha. How fun though a frunk and a storage shelf :D

wow, a 1.5 or 1.6L flat-four, I’m rather impressed it’s top speed is listed at 77mph, although I imagine you’d probably want to drive this thing at 60-65 on the highway.

herringbone paint, how’s that work? I’m imagining the herringbone pattern I’m having my kitchen floor laid in, haha.

I think 65 may be overly optimistic, actually. 55-60 would be more comfortable - really more of an in-town car. They’re neat cars, but never sold in big numbers in the US. As someone else pointed out, you have all that storage space in the back, AND a frunk.

I had it wrong. It’s a houndstooth pattern I was thinking of. I’m not saying it’s a good idea -- it seemed like one when I was 15-16 years old and it popped into my head out of nowhere.

Literally a square back.
classic;
or hooded;

I had my Beetle with the 1.6L up to 90 MPH once if you can believe that. Stock except for exhaust. It’s also not *too* much lighter than the squareback. That was floored in 4th gear though so I didn’t do it for longer than 2 seconds or so.

Haha, was it on a downhill?

No, it was actually on a pretty flat straight... there might be a chance that it was actually closer to 85... my speedo was kind of funky on that car.
